MELUG North

MELUG North, founded in April of 1999, is the northern chapter of MELUG, the Maine Linux User's Group. We are a small group, open to the public, of both hobbyists and professionals, hard core Unix users and newbies. Feel free to drop in no matter what your experience, and don't let the hardcore people scare you!

Most group activity happens on our social network, thanks to Ning.

We're meeting on Monday, October 22, 2007 starting at 5:30 P.M. and going until at least 7:00 (feel free to come late if you have to) at PC/Mac Computer Techs thanks to Mitch and Mitch Sowa. They're at 88 Hammond Street, Bangor, right downtown. There is free (since we meet in the evening) parking in the lot on the corner of Hammond and Columbia Street. After parking, go in the door between The Courtyard Grille and Bangor Wine and Cheese and go straight back. You'll run into the doors which are angled slightly left and have a set of steps going down immediately inside.

Information about mailinglists and the benefits of MELUG North membership are on the Resources Page.

We have the O'Reilly Newsletter online, as well as a number of Book Reviews.

If you have any other questions, feel free to email the mailing list. You can also reach Seth at north@melug.org, but as in all such cases, the list is much more likely to be able to help you.

News

September, 2007

Membership on the social network is slowly increasing and so is activity. If you're interested in meetings, there's a thread there on the subject and it needs your help.

May, 2007

As a result of observation at the April meeting that limitations of time and place are keeping a large number of potential Melug North regulars and would be members separated from the value of the group, we're using Ning to try the social networking thing. Our network is at melugnorth.ning.com.

Instead of (or in addition to) putting our content in presentations and discussions at meetings that compete for prime social time slots, we're trying putting it here, creating a body of interaction that demonstrates value to potential members and can be accessed at individual member's convenience.

I (Seth) will try to push something like content out periodically and you're encouraged to do the same. Since we're working with web log posts which don't have to fill a given length time slot and can be edited (if only to include pointers) over time, even short items that don't cover an entire subject are useful.

January, 2007

New O'Reilly Newsletter up.

This month's meeting included surprise coverage of a few useful Firefox extensions and some hints on Firefox chrome styling via userChrome.css. As announced, the main coverage was of the Atom Feed specification.

March, 2006

Alvah contributed a review of "The Art of Assembly Language" some time ago and Seth finally put it online. Thanks Alvah!

We also have a new installment of the O'Reilly Newsletter posted, and the website has a new look!

August, 2005

August's Melug North meeting was a great success. Greg Jeffery was with us again so there was plenty of discussion of medical imaging including the DICOM image file format. Also, Seth reported that Linus has handed git maintainence over to Junio C Hamano, and Robin introduced us to bing(8), a tool for measuring the bandwidth and latency of a remote point-to-point link.
